About Umhlobo Wenene FM
Umhlobo Wenene FM is the SABC's isiXhosa public broadcasting service, produced at Broadcasting House in Southernwood, East London, and one of the largest language services in the country.
It traces its origins to 1960 — the same year as Ukhozi FM — broadcasting first as part of Radio Bantu and later as Radio Xhosa, before taking its present name in 1995. The name means "the true friend", and the rebranding after 1994 was part of the wider reconstruction of the SABC's language services from instruments of separate development into genuine public broadcasters.
Programming is delivered in isiXhosa and spans news and current affairs, talk, music, sport, competitions and events, supported by podcasts, catch-up audio and vodcasts on its digital platforms. The station lists a presence in East London, Gqeberha, Mthatha, Bhisho, Makhanda, King William's Town, Queenstown and Uitenhage — a spread that reflects how dispersed the Eastern Cape's population centres are, and why the province needs more transmitters than its size suggests.
Its audience extends well past the Eastern Cape. Xhosa speakers are heavily represented in Cape Town and Gauteng, and the station is one of the most-streamed South African services from abroad for exactly that reason.
