About Radio 2000

Radio 2000 is a national public service station operated by the SABC, broadcasting in English from SABC Radio Park in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. It runs an adult contemporary format, but the thing that actually defines it is sport.

Sport occupies a substantial share of the schedule, and the station carries events of national significance live — which in practice makes it the radio home for a great deal of South African sporting commentary. For anyone who has followed a Test match or a Springbok fixture from a car on a national road, this is the station that was on. That role also makes it one of the more valuable services for South Africans abroad, though live sport is the one category most likely to be geo-restricted, for reasons our guide to listening from abroad explains.

Alongside sport it carries music, lifestyle programming and events coverage aimed at adult listeners rather than a youth market.

A note on the frequency, because Radio 2000 is a common source of confusion: the station publishes a nationwide transmitter list covering all nine provinces and summarises its dial position as 97.2 to 100 FM, although several of its own listed transmitters fall outside that band. The table on this page records them individually, which is the only reliable way to present a national service.

Note also that the name is not a frequency. Radio 2000, Radio 702 and Radio 786 are three entirely separate broadcasters whose numbers mean different things, which is a distinction worth making because directories routinely conflate them.
