About Lotus FM

Lotus FM is the SABC's public service station for South Africa's Indian communities, broadcasting from the corporation's Durban premises on KE Masinga Road and on air since 1983.

It is the only service of its kind in the country, and the brief is unusually specific: the SABC describes it as serving five Indian linguistic groups and three religious groups. Sustaining a single daily schedule across that range — Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Gujarati and Urdu heritage, Hindu, Muslim and Christian audiences — is a genuinely difficult editorial problem, and it is the reason the station's programming moves between language, faith and generation in a way no commercial station would attempt.

The footprint is semi-national, taking in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Gqeberha and Cape Town, reflecting where South Africa's Indian communities are concentrated. The station publishes a transmitter list of eleven sites, most of them in KwaZulu-Natal.

Programming is positioned around Indian lifestyle and culture, blending Eastern and Western influences, and presented as a family service intended to educate, entertain and inform in line with the SABC's public mandate. The schedule includes talk, news, community and arts programming alongside music shows. It was named best public broadcasting service radio station at the 2021 Radio Awards.

Its diaspora audience is substantial — South African Indian communities in the UK, Canada, Australia and the Gulf stream it heavily, and for many it is the only broadcast link to a specific community rather than to the country in general.
