About X-K FM

X-K FM is the SABC's service for the !Xun and Khwe San communities at Platfontein, about fifteen kilometres outside Kimberley in the Northern Cape, and it is unlike anything else on the South African dial.

It broadcasts in !Xun and Khwedam — two of the most endangered languages in the country — and the station's stated mission is the preservation of those languages and the cultures carried in them. It went on air on 18 August 2000, built with an SABC investment of R700,000, broadcasting at first from a shipping container with a range of twenty to forty kilometres and a potential audience of around twenty thousand people.

That scale is the point rather than a footnote. Almost every other station in this directory is measured in hundreds of thousands or millions of listeners. X-K FM was built for a community of twenty thousand, most of them descendants of !Xun and Khwe soldiers and their families relocated from Angola and Namibia to Schmidtsdrift and later to Platfontein — a history that left two distinct language communities living side by side in one settlement.

A radio station is an unusual instrument of language preservation, and a persuasive one. Broadcasting means the language is used daily, publicly, for news and music and argument, by people who are paid to speak it well. For languages with few remaining first-language speakers and almost no written presence, that is close to the only mechanism available at any scale.

Alongside language work it has carried news and music since the beginning. For anyone interested in what public broadcasting is actually for, this station is the clearest answer the SABC has.
