About OFM

OFM broadcasts from Bloemfontein across the Free State and neighbouring provinces — one of the largest licence areas of any South African commercial station, and mostly farmland and small towns rather than metro.

That geography shapes everything about it. The format is adult contemporary music in English and Afrikaans, but the programming that distinguishes it is agricultural and business content built for an audience whose livelihood depends on it: market prices, weather that matters to a planting decision, and regional news from towns no national bulletin will name.

It covers a part of the country the metro stations effectively ignore. A commercial station serving Bloemfontein, Welkom, Kimberley, Kroonstad and the districts between them is doing something structurally different from one serving a single city, and the transmitter network reflects it — a series of frequencies rather than one, listed town by town in the table on this page.

The bilingual format is not a compromise either. Across the Free State and Northern Cape, moving between Afrikaans and English inside a single show is how a great many listeners actually speak, and stations that insist on one language lose half the room.
