About East Coast Radio
East Coast Radio is KwaZulu-Natal's biggest commercial station, playing contemporary music with presenter-led breakfast and drive shows and an unusually heavy commitment to local news, traffic and events.
The regional licence runs the length of the province, from the north coast through Durban and down to the south coast, plus the Midlands — a coastline several hundred kilometres long, served by a series of transmitters rather than one frequency. The table on this page lists them by town, which matters more here than in most provinces because the N2 coastal drive crosses several transmitter areas.
What distinguishes ECR from an equivalent station in another province is how much of its identity sits outside the studio. Its charity campaigns, its beach and festival outside broadcasts, and its coverage of the province's weather — which in KwaZulu-Natal means genuine flood and storm reporting rather than a forecast read off a screen — are a large part of why it holds the audience it does. During the 2022 floods and similar events, a station with local reporters in the affected towns is a different proposition from a national playlist.
Choose East Coast Radio for the KwaZulu-Natal commute, contemporary music and provincial news that treats the province as the main story rather than a regional insert.
