About Kaya FM 95.9

Kaya 959 is a Johannesburg commercial station aimed at an older, urban audience, and its music policy is what sets it apart: Afro-soul, jazz, R&B and South African music rather than the current chart.

The word kaya means home, and the positioning is deliberate — this is a station for people who grew up on the music the chart stations have moved past, and who want it played by presenters who know why it matters. The talk share is higher than most music stations, with substantial business, arts and current-affairs programming through the day, and the interviews tend to run at a length the commercial norm does not allow.

If the other metro stations feel too young or too chart-driven, this is usually the one people move to, and the audience it holds is the one advertisers find hardest to reach anywhere else.

Its jazz programming is worth singling out. South Africa has a jazz tradition that is genuinely its own — the Cape and Johannesburg lineages both — and Kaya is one of very few commercial stations that treats it as current music rather than heritage.
