About 5FM
5FM is the SABC's national youth and contemporary music station — current chart music, dance and hip hop with a presenter-led format. It first aired on 13 October 1975 as Radio 5, taking the name 5FM in 1992, which makes it older than most of the audience it targets and one of the longest-running youth music brands in the country.
It is also one of the South African stations most often searched for by frequency, and one of the most frequently got wrong. Because it broadcasts nationally, it uses a different frequency in every region — a single national figure for 5FM is always incorrect, whoever is quoting it. The station's position has shifted as the market has. Its measured audience peaked in the low millions in 2012 and has declined since, which is the pattern across youth music radio worldwide as streaming took the function radio used to serve — hearing new music first. What radio still does that a playlist does not is tell you what is popular here, now, among people in this country, and 5FM remains one of the clearest signals of that.
