RSG — Radio Sonder Grense, "radio without borders" — is the SABC's national Afrikaans service and the main Afrikaans talk and music station in the country. It is also the oldest continuously running service on the South African dial, having begun in 1937 as the SABC's "B" service.

The name has changed more than the station has. It became Radio Suid-Afrika in 1986, Afrikaans Stereo in the early 1990s, and took the name RSG in 1996 as part of the SABC's post-1994 reconstruction of its language services.

The schedule is talk-heavy by South African standards: news, current affairs, agricultural and business programming, sport and arts coverage, alongside music that ranges across the Afrikaans repertoire rather than sticking to current releases. It is the only Afrikaans station still producing radio drama at scale, which matters more than it sounds — it is the reason the language retains a broadcast register that commercial radio has no commercial reason to maintain.

Coverage is nationwide between 100 and 104 FM, with DAB+ in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town. At its measured peak in 2012 it reported a seven-day audience just under two million.

It is streamed heavily by Afrikaans speakers abroad — the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the Gulf — and for that audience it does something a playlist cannot, which is carry the language as it is currently spoken.
