About YFM
YFM is a Johannesburg youth station, and it has been a more significant force in South African music than its size suggests. A great deal of local hip hop, kwaito and more recently amapiano reached a mass audience through its playlists first.
That matters because of how South African music actually travels. Genres here tend to break outside radio — in taxis, at street parties, on shared files — and then wait for programmers to catch up. YFM has historically been the station that caught up fastest, which is why artists and producers have treated it as the gate worth getting through since the late 1990s.
The format is music-led with presenter shows, club mixes and a heavy emphasis on new South African releases. Weekend mix shows are where the station is most itself, and where the music gets played at its own length rather than trimmed to a daytime edit.
If you want to hear what is breaking in Johannesburg rather than what is already established, this is the more useful of the metro music stations. If you want what has already broken, Metro FM and 947 will have it, and will have it in higher rotation.
